Suzuki Viola Book 1

Let’s talk about the Suzuki Viola Book 1?

The Suzuki Method, also known as the Mother Tongue Method was developed by Shinichi Suzuki (1898-1998). His belief was that children could learn music in the same way they learn their native language. Using the same principles as the Mother Tongue we can make learning natural and fluid. And still focusing on high standards of quality without losing the joy of learning and discovery!

Shinichi Suzuki principal instrument was the violin and his method became famous internationally mainly after his successful tour to America and Europe in late 1960’s and early 1970’s

In 1964 the first Japanese Suzuki tour group performed in the USA for music educators, and in 1973 the tour group travelled in Europe.

As the main repertoire of “Suzuki Violin School – Volume 1” took form, why not using the same methodology applied to other instruments, specially the viola, the closest sibling from the “violin family”.

Suzuki Viola Book 1 Repertoire

The Suzuki Viola Book 1 repertoire is basically the same as Suzuki Violin Book 1, with the addition two songs and you can download them for free below:

  • French Folk Song
  • Bohemian Folk Song

Both songs are great addition to the violin repertoire, as they explore different abilities

In the French Folk Song the usage of different bow speed and a 3/4 time signature gives nice swing to this piece, this song is also found in the Cello Suzuki Book 1, making it a great piece to be played together with cellos!

Bohemian Folk Song brings a beautiful and melancholic melody using a lower 2nd finger on D string, a “new ability”, exploring the lower register on this instrument, where the viola really shines!
